Expression of Interest signup
Let us know you’re interested in becoming an FDNY Firefighter and that you want to receive information about how to do it. You’ll receive emails and text messages from us that will keep you updated about the process, key dates, further action items and more.

Create Your OASys Account
You MUST create an OASys account to apply for the Firefighter exam. If your contact email and/or phone number changes after you create your account, be sure to log in again and change it as soon as possible so you don’t miss anything.

ABOUT THIS STEP

Applying to Become a Firefighter
You can start your process of becoming an FDNY Firefighter as early as 17½ years of age, but. should not reach your 29th birthday by the beginning of the application process (June 24th)— unless you meet one of these exceptions. – If you are on the Special Military list for the Firefighter Exam, you cannot turn 36-years old by the beginning of the current application period to be eligible to take the exam. – If you were on active military duty, you can subtract the amount of time you spent on duty from your actual age. (The maximum subtraction is 7 years per Section 243 of New York State Military Law.)

Testing & Preparation
Before the test is given, applicants will be invited to FREE in-person tutorial sessions, which will provide valuable test- and note-taking tips, as well as simple math and reading-comprehension exercises, so when it’s time to take the test you’ll know what to expect.

Finding Out Your Score
To view your score for the FDNY Firefighter exam #4044 online, you can check your OASys account or go to NYC Open Data Civil Service List (active) Preparation resources list.

Physical Test & Preparation
If you passed the written exam, you will need to pass the DCAS Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), which includes an agility and strength test. FDNY offers a 12-week preparation program to help you prepare and pass the exam.

Mentorship Opportunity

Once your list number is reached, in addition to preparing you for the DCAS CPAT exam, you will have the opportunity to opt into our Firefighter Candidate Mentorship Program (FFCMP). Our Mentors are active, veteran Firefighters who would love to support you through the process. Once you are paired with a Mentor, they will continue to support you until you graduate from the fire academy.

If you join the FDNY mentorship program, your mentor can assist you and prepare you for the Fire Academy.

ABOUT THIS STEP

Fire Academy Training
To graduate, you’ll need to successfully complete an 18-week classroom and physical fitness program that includes fire-service training. Overall grades at the Fire Academy include an assessment of in-class exams, academics and physical fitness performance.
